Training Program for Hou Zonglian Pilot Class

Training objectives

Follow the principals of 8 years integration, global optimization, reinforcing the basic medicine, lay emphasis on clinical medicine, focusing on skill training, improving individual qualities, The aim of this program is to prepare outstanding medical students for being high level newly qualified doctors with integrated development in moral, mentality, physical and aesthetics, generous knowledge of humanistic and social science, natural science and wide international perspective, solid medical knowledge and clinical skill, and good development potential. After the graduation, students will get MBBS and the degree of Doctor of Medicine and have the abilities to conduct basic and clinical research in the field of public health.

Graduate Outcome

A.Morality and professionalism

At the end of basic medical education, graduates are able to:

1. Develop the correct view of life and values, possess the spirit of patriotism and humanisminherit the spirit of "advocate morality and medicine and pursuit truth and innovation", and never give up the lofty idea of "pursuing the light of life".

2. Demonstrate professional values in health practice, including empathy, respect for all patients and commitment to high quality clinical service standards.Take the disease prevention and treatment as life-long responsibility, the end-of-life care as moral responsibility, and public health care as professional responsibility.

3. Abide by the laws and regulations, be familiar with medical laws and regulations, recognize medical activities are under supervision of corresponding laws, and learn how to protect the benefits of both doctors and patients.

4. Explain and apply the main principles of medical ethics in clinical practices. Communicate effectively with patients and their family members, colleagues and other health care professionals regarding ethical issues in medicine.

5. Demonstrate awareness of self-directed learning and lifelong learning. Recognize the importance of continuous self-improvement and demonstrate a commitment to excellence. Possess the good ability of knowledge update and self-development potential

6. Possess the rigorous scientific attitude, and strong ability of critical thinking and innovation;

7. Demonstrate the sense of international cooperation and competition,spirit of team-work, and good ability of communication, coordination and management.

8. Possess highly literate and moral sentiment, good mental health and physical condition.

B. Science and Scholarship

At the end of basic medical education, graduates are able to:

1. Possess the fundamental knowledge of the medicine-related disciplines, such as Math, Physics, Chemistry, Life Science, Behavioral Science, Social Science and technology of information processing. Be familiar with the internal relation between medicine and humanities. Know the development of Literature, History, Philosophy, Social science and technology.

2. Possess the fundamental knowledge and general skill of basic and clinical medicine, the basic knowledge of preventive medicine, social medicine, psychology, ethics, evidence-based medicine and traditional Chinese medicine.

3. Master the normal structures. functions and psychological state of human body at all stages of life.

4. Master the principles of etiology, pathogenesis, pathology, clinical manifestation, diagnosis, prevention and treatments of common and frequently-occurring diseases.

5. Understand the influences of social, behavioral and psychological factors on the pathogenesis and development of disease, and the importance of diseases prevention.

6. Master the general knowledge of pharmacology and the principles of rational use of drugs in practice.

7. Master the characteristics, diagnosis and principle of treatment of emergency and severe case.

8. Master the basic features of traditional Chinese medicine and its basic principle of diagnosis and treatment.

9. Master the general rules of pathogenesis, development and transmission of infectious diseases, and the prevention and therapeutic principles of common infectious diseases.

10. Master the basic knowledge of community prevention and general family medicinethe principles of health education, disease screening and preventionand the knowledge and methods for the improvement of patient’s condition, medical care of physical disabilities and rehabilitation, and hospice care.

11. Master the knowledge and methods of clinical epidemiology, and understand the importance of scientific research for medicine.

C. Clinical practice

At the end of basic medical education, graduates are able to:

1. Possess the primary ability of practitioner, including taking a medical history in a proper, comprehensive and systematic way, perform a full and accurate physical examination, selecting and performing common investigations and a range of common procedures safely, and writing medical records in Chinese and English as required.Make the primary judgements and decisions for the common and frequently-occurring diseases in internal medicine, surgery, OB/GYN, pediatrics, and emergency.

2. Achieve the primary knowledge of secondary discipline who enrolled in. Know the cutting-edge technology and trend of the discipline. Reach the criteria for the second stage of the standardized training of residents

3. Conduct effective communications with patients, their family members. Understand patients’ questions, views, concerns and preferences, and ensure patients' full understanding of their situations and options. Involve patients in the decision-making and planning of their treatments.

4. Access, critically appraise, interpret and apply evidence from the medical and scientific literature. Retrieve, interpret and record information effectively in clinical data systems.

5. Apply knowledge of evidence-based medicine to investigate and solve the clinical problems.

6. Possess the foundation capabilities of primary health care and integrate prevention, early detection, health maintenance and chronic disease management where relevant into clinical practices.

7. Possess the rigorous thinking method and clinical thinking, the ability of expression, lifelong learning, and conducting relevant clinical research.

8. Communicate, read and translate scientific literature in English smoothly.

D. Health and Society

At the end of basic medical education, graduates are able to:

1. Accept responsibility to protect and advance the health and well-being of individuals, communities and populations.

2. Explain factors that contribute to health, illness, disease and success of treatment of populations, including issues relating to health inequities and inequalities, diversity of cultural, spiritual and community values, and socio-economic and physical environment factors.

3. Communicate effectively in wider roles including health advocacy.

4. Explain and evaluate common population health screening and prevention approaches, including the use of technology for surveillance and monitoring of the health status of populations, and provide instructions on patients' follow-up visits, medications and rehabilitative therapies, etc.

5. Understand the quality assurance system and safety management system of health care in hospitals, and be aware of their own competence, responsibility and limits in medical practice. Attach importance to patients' safety, and recognize relevant risk factors in time.

6. Understand the structures and functions of the national health care system in China, and the roles and relationships between health agencies and services, and understand the principles of rational allocation of resources, to meet the needs of individuals, populations and national health systems.

7. Understand the global health issues and the determinants of health and diseases.

Education system and Degree

Eight years with Bachelor and professional Doctor degree in Clinical Medicine

Major Disciplines and Courses

Major Discipline: Biology, Basic Medicine, Clinical Medicine

Relevant Discipline: Preventive Medicine, humanistic and social science

Major Course: consist of 7 blocks.

1. General Knowledge Block: The courses in this block mainly include Ideology and Politics, National Defense, Humanistic and Social Science, Computer, English, Gym, Math, Physics, Chemistry, Dialectics of Nature, Health Economics, Special subjects of Public Health Administration, Laws and Regulations for Public Health, Medical Psychology and Social Medicine, etc.

2. Preclinical Block: The courses in this block mainly include Biological courses such as Cell Biology, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Medical and Molecular Genetics, Neurobiology,Bioinformatics, etc., and preclinical courses such as Systemic Anatomy, Histology and Embryology, Physiology, Pathophysiology, Pathology, Pharmacology, Medical Microbiology, Medical Immunology, Human Parasitology, Regional Anatomy, Function Experiments and Experimental Zoology, etc.

In this block, PBL teaching method is applied by integrating the courses, including Systemic Anatomy, Histology and Embryology, Physiology, Pathology, Pathophysiology, Pharmacology, Medical Microbiology, Medical Immunology, Human Parasitology, Neurobiology and Medical and Molecular Genetics, into 12 Teaching Sections according to the human body systems.

3. Clinical Block: The courses in this block mainly include Diagnostics, Medical Imaging, Traditional Chinese Medicine, Internal Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics, Lemology, Neurology, Psychiatry, Dermatovenereology, Ophthalmology, Otorhinolaryngology, Stomatology, Emergency Medicine, Evidence Based Medicine, Nuclear Medicine, Oncology, Interventional Radiology, Clinical Epidemiology, Patient-Doctor Relationships and General Family Medicine, etc.

In this block, PBL teaching method is applied by integrating the courses, including Diagnostics, Medical Imaging, Traditional Chinese Medicine, Internal Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics, Lemology, Neurology, Psychiatry, Evidence Based Medicine, Nuclear Medicine, Oncology, Interventional Radiology, Clinic Epidemiology, Patient-Doctor Relationships and General Family Medicine, into 12 core Teaching sections according to the human body systems.

4. Public Health Block: The courses in this block mainly include Public Health, Biostatistics, Epidemiology, Health Promotion and Clinical Nutriology.

5. Professional Degree Block: The courses are selected according to the requirements of Professional Degree (M.D.).

6. Intensive Practice Block: The clerkship and internship Include Early Exposure to Clinical practice, Community based Primary Care, Off-campus Medical Practice, Preventive Medicine, General Rotation, Clinical Research Training, Developmental Training overseas, Second Discipline training program, and Defense of Doctor Degree Dissertation, etc.

7. Extracurricular practice Block: Arranged according to University corresponding regulations.
