Training program of Preventive Medicine

PROGRAM OBJECTIVES

The goal of this program is to cultivate the advanced public health talents who develop themselves in an all-around way of morality, intelligence, physique and art. To possess spirit of innovation and sense of social responsibility. To master the theories and technology skills of biological and clinic medicine, and solid theories and methods of public health and preventive medicine. To own ability of management of public health affairs and problem solution, information and data collection and treatments, and master the basic strategy and methods against public health emergency, and be able to work in public health departments of related health sectors.

PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS

The requirements of the specialty are as follows:

A. requirements of morality and occupational qualities

1. Strongly devote to public health and preventive medicine, firmly establish the concept of “prevention first”, possess the ideal of dedication of his life to the course of nation’s health development and human’s physical and psychological health.

2. Take disease control, health protection and the promotion of national health level as his own obligation, abide the national law, and enforce the law impartial.

3. Establish the correct concept of medical ethics; take care of the patients, respect patients’ personality and privacy.

4. Take the health interest of community population as their professional responsibilities.

5. Possess the spirit of analysis and criticism, cultivate the scientific attitude of seeking truth from facts and master the correct methods to solve problems.

6. Establish the concept of lifelong study; possess the consciousness of innovation and the spirit of exploring, and pursuit excellence continuously.

7. Respect for colleagues, establish team awareness, have good interpersonal communication ability.

B. requirements of knowledge objectives

1. Master the knowledge and methods of medical related natural science, behavioral science and social science; apply them to guide the practice of learning and disease prevention and control.

2. Understand the normal structure and functions of human body in different stages of life, and its various characteristics under abnormal situations.

3. Understand the etiologies, mechanisms, diagnoses and principles of treatment and prevention of all kinds of common diseases, frequently occurring diseases.

4. Master the basic theories and methods of modern Preventive Medicine. Possess the basic abilities and skills in respect of prevention and control of diseases, improving the human labor and living environment health, and improving nutrition and food safety; understand the frontier knowledge of this specialty; possess the abilities of absorbing new knowledge initiatively and utilizing it correctly.

5. Master the principles and methods of studies on the relationship between the environmental factors and health; understand how harmful factors under different environmental conditions impact on population health, its hazards, characteristics and its own influential factors; master the knowledge and skills of identification, monitoring and evaluation of health harmful factors.

6. Master the basic theoretical knowledge of how social and psychological factors impact on people health.

7. Be familiar with national health work guidelines, policies, laws and regulations. Master the basic methods and procedures of health service management, hygiene supervision and law enforcement.

8. Master the knowledge and methods on health education, health promotion, and on enhancement of self-care consciousness and healthy level of population.

C. requirements of practical skill and ability

1. Possess better preventive medicine thoughts and expression ability.

2. Possess basic skills on hygienic inspecting and supervising the harmful factors under different environment conditions.

3. Possess basic research abilities in analyzing various factors, which affect population health, and in studying disease occurrence and epidemical dynamics. Possess the basic skills in tracking foreign medical progress, and engaging in the study of preventive medicine.

4. Possess preliminary abilities in formulating implementation plan to prevent diseases and improve population health, and abilities in carrying out the plan.

5. Possess preliminary analysis and research abilities in carrying out investigation, formulating field investigation plan, designing investigation form, collecting and managing the data.

6. Possess basic abilities in preventing and treating common diseases and frequently occurring diseases, and developing community health care services.

7. Possess certain abilities in carrying out social work, organizing and coordinating, and abilities of interpersonal communication, health education and health promotion intervention.

8. Possess basic abilities in dealing with public health emergencies, and the ability of fieldwork.

9. Possess certain basic abilities in respect of health care management, and the basic abilities in carrying out health supervision.

10. Master one foreign language proficiently, and possess the language abilities of communication and application; Possess application ability in using preventive medicine related software, and using all kinds of information resources and technology to learn and to do researches independently.

YEARS OF STUDY, DEGREE GRANTING AND GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS

5 years with a Bachelor’s degree of Medicine.

Minimum credit requirements: 210 credits for in-class learning, and 8 credits for extracurricular activities.

In addition, the students are required to complete the military training, pass the national CET-4 exam, and meet the National Standard for College Students’ Physique Health before graduation.

BASIC COURSES FOR THE PRIMARY DISCIPLINE

Human Anatomy, Histology and Embryology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Physiology, Immunology, Medical Microbiology, Pathology, Pathophysiology, Medical Genetics, Pharmacology, Diagnostics, Medical Imaging, Internal Medicine, General Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics, lemology.

PROFESSIONAL CORE COURSES

Biostatistics, Epidemiology, Health Toxicology, Sanitary Chemistry, Occupational Health and Occupational Medicine, Environmental Hygienic, Nutrition and Food Hygiene, Children and Women Health Care, Health Service Management, and Sanitary Legislation and Control, etc.

PRACTICE TRAINING

The principal internship and practical training include: Military Training, Preventive Medicine professional skill training, summer session practical training. Scientific research ability and method training, international exchange and practice. See detail requirements in course description and requirements.

COURSE SELECTION REQUIREMENTS

A. The course module Settings

The courses include 3 modules; they are general education courses, general platform courses and specialized courses. Among them, general education course module includes: common-required courses 24 credits (ideological and political theory course 13 credits, military theory 1 credits, College English 8 credits, and Physical Education 2 credits), general core courses and general optional courses, each has 6 credits.

In general platform courses and specialized courses modules, corresponding compulsory and optional courses are set on the basis of their characteristics.

Professional courses adopt the "Forward coherent " mode, namely the basic courses are forward protract to connect the specialized courses, helping the preventive medicine students to exposure early to the professional courses.

B. Requirements of optional courses in each module

The selection requirements of general core courses must choose 6 credits courses in 4 course modules which include: Natural science and technology, world civilization, society and art, cultural inheritance (No repetition in the same course module).

In general optional course, medical students can freely choose 6 credits within whole university optional courses; the course categories are not limited.

Classification teaching method is carried out in English courses, which include a 4 credits compulsory course and a 4 credits optional course. Students are required to take part in an English intensive training summer camp in the summer session in their first academic year; this is a compulsory part. Public English courses include three parts: they are theoretical course, practice course and self-study. Students must choose all the three parts and complete the related teaching requirements to obtain corresponding credit. Students must take Public Specking as optional course before taking English Debate.

Physical Education is a compulsory course in semester 1 to 4. In semester 5 to 8, the Special Education of P.E. do not set credit, of which it is a limited optional course in 5 and 6 semester, and is freedom optional course in 7 and 8 semester.

Optional courses of general platform courses and specialty course modules are the minimum credit requirements. Students can choose more courses on their own.

C. The explanations and requirements of Centralized Practical Teaching

1. Basic skill training of specialty include: Biomedical basic experiment skill training is arrange in the biomedical courses teaching process; clinical trainee teaching is interspersed in clinical teaching process; clinical internship teaching last for 20 weeks (10 credits) and is arranged in 8 semester and summer session.

2. Summer session practical training include: Military training are arranged after the student’s enrollment; College English, computer skill training are arranged in summer session of their first academic year, and carried out in an English intensive training summer camp as a compulsory part.

Preventive medicine early contact activities: Arranged in summer session. The course of Introduction to Public Health is set up in summer session of first academic year. It is carried out in seminars which introduce the public health and preventive medicine. Public health practical courses based on visiting public health related units are set up in second academic year.

3. In semester 10, internship in Center for Disease Control (CDC) (4 weeks, 4 credits) and graduation design (Bachelor Dissertation) (10 credits) is assigned. The graduation design is carried out following the pattern of “Practice oriented scientific research”. The topic of graduation design must be selected closely around the CDC practice, and completed with joint-guidance of the School of Public Health and CDC. The purpose of graduation design is to cultivate elementary science research abilities in Public health.

4. The training of the scientific research ability and method is arranged in the beginning of the second academic year, including “Three Innovations” education program, open experiment program, students research methods training etc, and will cover the whole medical education.

5. Encourage students to participate in practical activity like overseas short-term exchanges, which based on “summer camp”.

D. The requirements about extracurricular 8 credits are 

performed according to the arrangements of University Students’ Affairs Division.
